The Rec
San Juan Islands
We are a community destination.
We are more than a gym or pool — we are a community destination.
For generations, this facility has been part of the heartbeat of San Juan Island. Since the early 1980s, when Ted Hope helped establish the pool, countless island residents have learned to swim, trained for competition, recovered from injuries, built friendships, and begun their health journeys within these walls. Through different owners, evolving programs, and changing seasons of island life, this facility has remained a place where the community comes together.
The REC has long represented more than fitness. It is a place where children take their first swim lessons, athletes prepare for competition, families gather, and neighbors encourage one another toward healthier lives. Many island residents grew up here, and now bring their own children through the same doors to create the next generation of memories.
Our vision is to preserve and strengthen that legacy while continuing to grow alongside the needs of the community. We are committed to revitalizing the facility with thoughtful improvements, expanded programs, and new opportunities for recreation, wellness, and connection — all while honoring the traditions and community spirit that have made this place special for decades.
At its core, THE REC exists to serve San Juan Island: to provide a welcoming place for people of all ages and backgrounds to improve their health, build relationships, and find community. We are honored to continue this journey alongside the island and look forward to helping shape the next chapter together.
